Q. I am confused as to when to use 'an'. Some people say you should use an before letters beginning with H like an historical event. But i dont think it sounds right! You use 'an' if the word starts with a vowel sound, not just an actual vowel, so it depends on how you pronounce the words that start with h -- if the h is silent like in 'hour' you should say 'an'. With the word 'historical' a lot of people drop the 'h' and say 'istorical', it sounds better if they say 'an' but if you pronounce the 'h' it sounds better to say 'a'.
