How to learn to write the russian alphabet without cursive?
Q. Every example of the alphabet I've found is either typed or in cursive. I want to know how to write in the "common" way, does anyone know of any examples or traceable sheets like they'd make in grade school? Thanks! PS - If anyone knows any good beginning russian websites, that'd be much appreciated as well.

Q. I babysit two 5 year old girls that are starting kindergarten in a week. They know the alphabet and how to count for the most part but have trouble recognizing the letters and sounds from the alphabet. What are some ways to teach them the sounds of the letters and how to recognize capital and lower case letters that they will enjoy? I have tried a couple of things but they get bored if it isn't a game. Ideas?

How many parents of preschoolers find teaching the alphabet difficult?
Q. I'm writing a newsletter for parents, and don't know if I should include a section on "Teaching the Alphabet." Is this something parents are pretty comfortable with, or should I give some insight on ways to make learning the alphabet more meaningful and fun?
Asked by MountainChick - Wed Aug 15 23:34:56 2007 - Preschool - 9 Answers - Comments

A. I think that your parents might find it very helpful (particularly those who aren't holding a full deck). The alphabet is not something that you learn in order, but OUT of order and that is not a commonly known thing. Be sure to put lots of different ways to learn the alphabet in your section (tactile, sensory, songs, stories 'Chicka Chicka Boom Boom' is a good one). Congrats on having a good view of teaching and being willing to take the time and help out the 'homefront'.

Where do police get the alphabet phoenetics from?
Q. How did they decide on alpha, foxtrot, zulu, etc to replace the alphabet letters? Yes but why have they picked those particular words for?

A. The phonetic alphabet has changed over the years. For instance, the letter B was BOY until 1927 and was changed to BAKER during WWII. It was changed to BRAVO in 1957. The reason we have the current designations is because audio researchers decided these words would be the one most distinctive of that particular letter and least likely to be confused with other letters. Example: charlie for C and EASY for E sounded too similar so E was changed to ECHO.

A. subdermatoglyphic (17) --- @Sim: I once checked that titin-name to see how many different letters it contains (I know, I have no life...). I forgot how many there were exactly but surprisingly, it was only 17 or 18! Such chemical names are not normally considered 'words' in the true sense though.

How did the English language adopt the Latin alphabet?
Q. I mean Britannia spoke Celtic,Latin was for the educated masses in the middle and dark ages. This question is beyond me.English is supposedly a west Germanic language.I can reason that that the Mediterranean and other parts(Iberia,Germania,Romania) were part of the Roman Empire Proper and from what i gather, Latin wasn't enforced in Britain. So English in Latin alphabet seems puzzling to me. So Is the Latin alphabet an adopted alphabet for English?(Turkish,Romanian,Azeri are some examples) Or am I totally incorrect and the truth is something else.
Asked by - Tue Nov 8 09:39:30 2011 - Languages - 4 Answers - Comments

A. there was of course a time when the educated classes in the Celtic lands used ogam, and the north germanic tribes used runes for inscriptions. Both can be cut into wood/chiselled into stone [look and see how angular they are]. Education came to Britain with the Romans [it was of course part of the Empire, you must be aware of the Roman towns such as Londinium, Camulodunum, Verulamium... and their modern counterparts] but literacy was even more widely disseminated with the arrival of Christianity [St Augustine 597] and many monks who of course used Latin, wrote in Latin, taught that way of writing. In any case it's a damn sight faster and more useful than ogam scratchings or the futhark. There are of course different scripts - e.g. uncial,… [cont.]

How were the letters of the alphabet ordered?
Q. I was originally curious as to why the alphabet has an order at all, but I was able to find a question asking just that. Feel free to answer that as well, though. The main question just derived from that thought. I'm referring to the English alphabet; why are the letters in the alphabet ordered starting with "A" and ending in "Z?" I'm sure it's based on the order other languages presented their letters, but where would that order have come from?
Asked by - Tue May 17 23:15:24 2011 - Languages - 1 Answers - Comments

A. My friend, The alphabet used in English, and with some variations in most other European languages, comes from Semitic speakers who adapted it from Egyptian hieroglyphics about 4,000 years ago. The rudiments of modern alphabetic order first appeared about 600 years later in Syria. With minor changes in letter order at each step, the alphabet passed from the Semites (including the Canaanites, Hebrews, and Phoenicians) to the Greeks to the Etruscans to the forebears of the Romans to us. As for the identity of the sage who first ordered it, and why that order, your guess is as good as mine. There's no obvious reason ABC is better than any other order. The dominant script of Ethiopia is related to our alphabet but uses a different order,… [cont.]

What is the meaning/interpretation behind doodling the alphabet?
Q. I am constantly doodling the alphabet and I am curious as to what the psycological meaning behind this is?
Asked by katie p - Tue Jul 17 12:41:22 2007 - Psychology - 2 Answers - Comments

A. the 'classical' psych' answer would be about identity - it's a self-feedback loop. you doodle and ponder in a kinda wordless way, what it is to be you, as you do it. NLP might give you some stuff about the kinaesthetic learning style - that some people think and learn better when they are doing something physical at the same time...classic 'kinaesthetic unconscious' types tend to doodle in classes and lectures and it really helps the stuff 'go in'! but these are broad answers - i used to doodle my handwriting by going over and over the alphabet because my dad was critical of my handwriting, for example, and i thought it really mattered! maybe what's more important is whether you enjoy it or not or whether it seems useful in some way.

How do you translate the Russian Cyrillic alphabet into the Latin alphabet?

Asked by Knight of Truth - Thu Jul 16 17:11:57 2009 - Languages - 4 Answers - Comments

A. Yes, you can use or to perform transliterations to and from Cyrillic. I highly recommend, however, that you spend an hour some time learning the basic Cyrillic alphabet and the associated sounds and pronunciation rules, because there is no solid standard for transliteration, and people usually tend to just write out the sounds as they are used to hearing them, rather than as they are supposed to be read.

Was the Thai alphabet really derived from the Sinhala alphabet?
Q. According to legend, King Ramkhamhaeng, The youngest son of King Si Inthratit, the first king of Thailand, modified the Sinhala (Sri Lankan) Script to create the Thai alphabet. The first written Thai language is inscribed on a stone known to Thais as the "Ramkhamhaeng stele". However, The Thai alphabet doesn't look like the Sinhala alphabet. Thai alphabet looks more like the Khmer (Cambodian) alphabet. Thai was once a part of the Khmer empire during King Ramkhamhaeng's time. Was the Thai alphabet derived from the Khmer or Sinhala alphabet?

A. "The Thai alphabet is derived from the Old Khmer script (Thai: akkhraekhmr, akchara khamen), which is a southern Brahmic style of writing called Vatteluttu. Vatteluttu was also commonly known as the Pallava script by scholars of Southeast Asian studies such as George Coedes." "According to tradition it was created in 1283 by King Ramkhamhaeng the Great (Thai: ph khunraamkhamaehngmhaaraach)." "The Ramkhamhaeng stele" [...] "This stone was allegedly discovered in 1833 by King Mongkut (then still a monk) in the Wat Mahathat. Where can I find a counted cross stitch alphabet?
Q. I'm looking for a backstitch (single line, not Xs) alphabet. I need one about 9-10 stitches high and if it was a little fancy (or at least not plain) it would be great. I've been searching on-line with no luck and even checked my local Hobby Lobby for one to buy with no result. Anyone know where I can find one? Or how I can make one with PCStitch 5? (I've only figured out how to make cross stitch alphabets with it, not backstitch ones.) Thanks in advance!
Asked by countinstitches - Thu Aug 10 20:12:49 2006 - Hobbies & Crafts - 6 Answers - 1 Comments

A. This one is only four stitches high, but I'd think you could double it fairly easily. That's what I usually do. Here's another one that's a little fancier: Get some graph paper and play around with altering the letters until you get what you want. Hope this helps!
