Did the American Psychological Association lose all scientific base when they bowed to politics "Rind et al."?
Q.
Asked by sincere12_26 - Sat Oct 6 15:28:36 2007 - Psychology - 1 Answers - Comments

A. The APA did ask for an independent review of the findings, but did not follow through. At some point, the APA decided to honor the effectiveness of peer review rather than bowing to the personal and unscientific biases of the politicians involved. I should note that neither I nor the APA condones behavior which some may justify by quoting the results of the Rind study.

American psychologycal association division of psychology question!?
Q. I know that multilple choice questions isn't exactly idyllic... but i'm really stuck here. When 1,000 members of the American Psychological Association Division of Psychotherapy were asked to describe their main theoretical orientation, the most common response was: a. cognitive therapy. b. eclectic psychotherapy. c. psychodynamic therapy. d. humanistic therapy.

A. B.) Eclectic!! A nice mix, combining elements of A, C, D (and other orientations, too) into an integrative blend that works well with a diverse population - psychotherapy is not a one-size-fits-all practice. There's a lot to be learned from combining techniques from different approaches, and the majority of psychologists identify themselves as working in this eclectic mix.

Do you respect the research of organizations like the American Psychological Association?
Q. Do you believe their findings on the subject of homosexuality, that it is not an illness, isn't chosen, and cannot be changed? Or do you believe they gave in to pressure from gay groups, as some have suggested, despite the fact that nearly every other mental health organization (apart from NARTH) is in agreement with them? I'm curious how you "lobby" a group that deals with facts and science. Does anyone have any proof of "gay groups" doing this? Devoted1: I think if you click on the link in my question, you'll find the most people do NOT think it is treatable. If you would like to post a link to actual stories of APA members being lobbied, I would love to see it. Devoted1 again: I am dubious that anyone you know "c [cont.]

A. You do not need the APA to tell you Sexual Preference is not a choice. I can no more choose who I am attracted to than who I fall in love with. I find it especially interesting when people like Devoted1 who are obviously of some religious affiliation giving an opinion on something, claiming to know first hand when it is obvious to the rest of us that their religious bias is obstructing the truth.

What is American Psychological Association?
Q. Could someone explain in depth what the American Psychological Association is used or and what its main professional knowledge and abilities are?
Asked by - Mon Nov 8 02:10:24 2010 - Psychology - 1 Answers - Comments

A. It is an association of professionals, not unlike the American Medical Association, but this one is for psychologists. The association itself is not the source of knowledge or abilities, it's leadership and members are. Such associations generally set the industry standards while monitoring that their members continue to meet those standards. The association will also provide/recommend opportunities for continuing education to it's members. There is generally an association publication.

The American Psychological Association Ethics Code would not allow John Watson to carry out his research on Li?
Q.
Asked by T - Fri Jun 17 22:26:36 2011 - Psychology - 2 Answers - Comments

A. . . . . on Little Albert. Yes, today the APA ethics code would forbid Watson from performing his research. One of the biggest reasons is that studies should have subjects at no more than minimal risk (slight discomfort, little emotional distress. . . . . no more than would be possibly experienced in daily life). With Little Albert, Watson overstepped this - he conditioned a child to greatly fear pretty much anything that was similar to a small white rat (a rabbit, a puppy, a mask, a fur coat). In any experiment that poses any type of risk, especially those with more than minimal risk, signed and informed consent is needed from the participant. Albert was a small child and therefore could not give consent. He could not verbally refuse to… [cont.]

The Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association?
Q. Why is this writing manual called the APA Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association? I know this is a writing style guide, but does this guide have anything to do with Psychology?
Asked by - Sat Jul 4 16:34:17 2009 - Psychology - 1 Answers - Comments

A. The guide itself does not have anything to do with psychology. The only connection to psychology itself is that the guide is developed by the American Psychological Association for psychological researchers to write reports for publication. Whenever you read a psychology research article in a peer-reviewed journal the manuscript for that article was submitted following the APA formatting guidelines.

What do you think of this statement about homosexuality made by the American Psychological Association?
Q. Is homosexuality a mental disorder? No, lesbian, gay, and bisexual orientations are not disorders. Research has found no inherent association between any of these sexual orientations and psychopathology. Both heterosexual behavior and homosexual behavior are normal aspects of human sexuality. Both have been documented in many different cultures and historical eras. Despite the persistence of stereotypes that portray lesbian, gay, and bisexual people as disturbed, several decades of research and clinical experience have led all mainstream medical and mental health organizations in this country to conclude that these orientations represent normal forms of human experience. Lesbian, gay, and bisexual relationships are normal forms of human… [cont.]

A. People have always used the Bible to beat up on gay people, and they always will, as long as they uphold their hatred and bigotry. I mean, these are the same people who are rejecting evolution. Doesn't matter how many scientific facts you want to throw in their faces. If they want to hate, they will, and hide behind their so-called holy books. Hayley - real nice, comparing gay people with pedophiles. Just lovely. EDIT: Well Hayley, obviously you have never heard of the expression "Consenting adults". And you have the nerve to compare what two consenting adults do to a form of child abuse. Are you also going to compare homosexuality to murder, rape, incest, or any other form of abuse? No wonder so many homosexuals hate themselves… [cont.]
