Belief, knowledge and epistemologyThe terms belief and knowledge are used differently in philosophy. Epistemology is the philosophical study of knowledge and belief. The primary problem in epistemology is to understand exactly what is needed in order for us to have knowledge. In a notion derived from Plato's dialogue Theaetetus, philosophy has traditionally defined knowledge as justified true belief. The relationship between belief and knowledge is that a belief is knowledge if the belief is true, and if the believer has a justification (reasonable and necessarily plausible assertions/evidence/guidance) for believing it is true. A false belief is not considered to be knowledge, even if it is sincere. A sincere believer in the flat earth theory does not know that the Earth is spherical. Similarly, a truth that nobody believes is not knowledge, because in order to be knowledge, there must be some person who knows it. Later epistemologists, for instance Gettier (1963) and Goldman (1967), have questioned the "justified true belief" definition. From Wikipedia under the

And the belief in Him without evidence doesn't make us better or worse people at all. Why this accumulation of irrational people in Heaven, and accumulation of rational people in Hell? From all the moral qualities He might have chosen to judge us, the belief in Him without evidence is the most important? And the most useless, because once we make it to Heaven, we finally know for sure He exists --if He does--. To be a more accurate analogy, instead of talking to your friend for months about his upcoming surprise party, you instead don't offer any proof not only of the party but of your own existence. He is imagining your voice in his head. The world around him is complete and explainable without any need to involve you in any way. In fact, you're not really his friend at all. It's sort of like the relationship I have with some guy in Malaysia that I've never met, though presumably I could look this guy up if I had to. Answered by Victor - Wed Sep 23 03:43:58 2009 Is there a difference between religious belief and superstition? Q. A person believes that if a black cat crosses his path something bad will happen. Can you disprove this? A gambler believes that if he plays the right numbers, or wears his 'lucky' shirt he will win money. Can you disprove his belief? What's the difference in their beliefs and someone believing that if they have enough faith in god something good will happen to them? Any takers? Bindy - in your first two examples you talk about what happened not about the believer's belief. in your third example you talk about both your belief and what you say happened. seems you are predjudiced against the first two superstitions, but not your own. efemerdi - neither will they for abandoning religious beliefs for reason Amir - "religious beliefs are… [cont.] Asked by toogethr - Fri Jan 30 14:01:44 2009 - - 6 Answers - 0 Comments A. I have owned two black cats in my lifetime and the only problem was to make sure I brought them in on Halloween due to the fact that they would have been sacrificed if there was a cult around. They were the best cats I have owned and I didn't have bad luck of any kind. I have an uncle who is a gamblerl...one week he would drive home in a caddie, the next trip he hitchhiked...and he was a gambler, I don't remember what he always took with him for his luck...but he did always have something on him...I was younger then...thats why I don't remember, I would have to ask him I believe in God. I survived my black cat, my uncle did not survive his habit, and I have felt the healing grace of my God. One cannot deny that God exist in my heart.… [cont.] Answered by bindysdogs - Fri Jan 30 14:10:03 2009 Is it delusional to think that your belief is best for everyone?
Q. Do you think that someone else's belief makes them inherently inferior if they are different from yours? I feel like religion is institutionalized lunacy, designed to be a conservative force in the world to hamper our intellectual evolution. You can enjoy your higher power as much as you want, it is not wrong. It's just not for me. Asked by CATheist - Tue Dec 2 12:19:16 2008 - - 29 Answers - 0 Comments A.
