Competitiveness is a comparative concept of the ability and performance of a firm, sub-sector or country to sell and supply goods and/or services in a given market. Although widely used in economics and business management, the usefulness of the concept, particularly in the context of national competitiveness, is vigorously disputed by economists, such as Paul Krugman .

The term may also be applied to markets, where it is used to refer to the extent to which the market structure may be regarded as perfectly competitive. This usage has nothing to do with the extent to which individual firms are "competitive'.

Firm competitiveness

Empirical observation confirms that resources (capital, labor, technology) and talent tend to concentrate geographically (Easterly and Levine 2002). This result reflects the fact that firms are embedded in inter-firm relationships with networks of suppliers, buyers and even competitors that help them to gain competitive advantages in the sale of its products and services. While arms-length market relationships do provide these benefits, at times there are externalities that arise from linkages among firms in a geographic area or in a specific industry (textiles, leather goods, silicon chips) that cannot be captured or fostered by markets alone. The process of “clusterization,” the creation of “value chains,” or “industrial districts” are models that highlight the advantages of networks.

Within capitalist economic systems, the drive of enterprises is to maintain and improve their own competitiveness.this practically pertains to business sectors.

How can I transform my boyfriend to be less competitive and aggressive?
Q. How can I transform my boyfriend to be less competitive and aggressive? And, to have more compassion, sympathy and communicate better. I need some suggestions.

A. Unless you have a magic wand, you can't just go "shazaam" you're different. Unless he WANTS to become a more compassionate and sympathetic person, you can't change that. If you want him to communicate more effectively with you, it will take time, patience, and willingness on both your parts. Competitiveness and aggression are a result of having more testosterone in the system than estrogen, as he gets older his testosterone level will drop and the two will be more balanced. Show compassion, sympathy and communicate, and maybe you can teach him how. If he has no desire to change, then he won't.

How do we overcome non-competitive inhibition of enzymes?
Q. Dear all, non-competitive ocurs when the inhibitor bind to sites other than the active site and causes conformational changes to the active site. Now, for competitive inhibition, it can be overcome by increasing substrate and this increases the chance of a substrate binding to the active site. Thus this is a reversible inhibition. What about the non-competitive inhibition? Is it a reversible one? Since no one competes with it for binding, my guess is that it's no reversible??? Any way to overcome non-competitive inhibition? Thanks all!

A. Dear Julian C, This is a good question, but I will just want to correct you on something first. It is true that competitive inhibition can be reversible. It is like a see-saw affect, if there is more inhibitors present than the substrate then these molecules are more likely to collide for the active site and vice versa, I see you understand this. However there are times when competitive inhibition can be irreversible. The antibiotic penicillin for instance, works by permanently occupying the active site of an enzyme that is essential for the synthesis of bacterial cell walls. Non-competitive inhibition may also be reversible or irreversible depending on whether the inhibitor binds temporarily or indefinitely. Adding extra substate will… [cont.]
