Do people in religious cults make out that society outside the cult is a lot worse than it really is?
Q. Pick a cult at random; let s try alphabetically, um, A for Amish. Do the Amish brainwash the people and children inside their cult compounds to think that society outside is a lot worse than it really is? Is brainwashing people to think that they are only safe within the cult compound a common tactic for people who run these cults?

A. A cult typically has a leader with a dynamic personality that attracts people to him/her. The leader will convince the members that their life would be more fulfilled within the group rather than outside the group. The leader will use many means of coercion to keeps members in the group, including indoctrination (brainwashing) and restricting members outside contact, including the members' families on the outside. The Amish, however, are not a cult. Almost all Amish people are born in to the religion and are always free to leave the faith if they want to. The Amish do not actively recruit new members. In fact, it is just the opposite. It is extremely rare that a person not born into Amish society is allowed to join. Also, they do not live… [cont.]

Can someone give me some websites about the negative effects of cults on society?
Q. I'm doing a research report on Heaven's Gate and my thesis is how cults like HG are harmful to society, but I am having troubles finding a website with the negative effects and facts. A lot of the sites I got didn't agree with my thesis, like the article "Cults: The sociological effects of negative outside views" talks about how people who are rejected by society go into cults and become dangerous.
