What would happen if earth's radius were somehow expanded?
Q. Would would happen to your weight if the earth were somehow expanded to a larger radius (but with no change in mass)? What about if the earth shrunk?

A. Expanded: you weight will decrease as a function of the square of the increase (doubling radius, weight divided by 4) Contracted: weight goes up. You have to remember that gravity would be the same if all of Earth's mass was concentrated in an object the size of a marble, with you at the same distance from the center as you are now (i.e. the rest of the earth would have no mass, like empty space with just a thin shell for the surface). Thus the gravity law which states that the force of attraction is proportional to the mass, and inversely proportional to the square of the distance, is exactly predicting what you would see.

Is Cl likely to exhibit an expanded octet in its compounds?
Q. I thought elements in the 5a and 6a column would be likely to have an expanded octet starting with row 3 and down. I didn't think Cl would be that likely.

A. I'm afraid you are wrong. Look at the series of compounds NaCl, NaClO, NaClO2, NaClO3 and NaClO4.

Q. How do you write a polynomial in expanded form (multiply it out) if its a 3rd degree leading coefficient, -3 and zero's 5, -2 and 0?

A. zero's 5, -2, 0 x = 5, x = -2, x = 0 x - 5 = 0, x + 2 = 0, x = 0 let P(x) = (x - 5)(x + 2)(x) expand P(x): P(x) = x - 3x - 10x since its leading coefficient is -3 we multiply P(x) by -3 -3P(x) = -3x + 9x + 30x so the polynomial is -3x + 9x + 30x
