Genre (pronounced /ˈʒɑːnrə/, also /ˈdʒɑːnrə/; from French, genre French pronunciation: [ʒɑ̃ʀ], "kind" or "sort", from Latin: genus (stem gener-), Greek: genos, γένος) is the term for any category of literature, as well as various other forms of art or culture e.g. music, based on some loose set of stylistic criteria. Genres are formed by conventions that change over time as new genres are invented and the use of old ones are discontinued. Often, works fit into multiple genres by way of borrowing and recombining these conventions.

While the scope of the word "genre" is commonly confined to art and culture, it also defines individuals' interactions with and within their environments. In order to be recognized as genre these interactions and environments must be recurring.

Do you think the fantasy genre is becoming oversaturated with too many writers?
Q. Is the quality of fantasy literature dying? Will people become tired and bored of all the sorcery, hack and slash stories; is it becoming a little too repetitive? I imagine most young writers will try to do fantasy, will this kill the genre?

A. a lot of people are starting to reinvent the genre, i think. like now a lot of stories are turning more modern or they are retellings of older stories. personally i like the fantasy writers that try putting a little humor in their stories. as long as there continues to be good fantasy books, fantasy will remain my favorite genre

What musical genre has the most dedicated fans?
Q. What genre of music has the most dedicated fans? I am not really a fan of one particular genre, but I would have to say Metal (all types) has the most dedicated fanbase. Bands like Iron Maiden have been playing large venues for decades and they get absolutely no radio support.

A. Metal has and probably always will have the most loyal fans ever.

How would i use Bildungsroman in a sentence to describe the genre of a text?
Q. That's the genre of The Catcher In The Rye apparently. But i don't know how to open my essay. Should i say it's a Bildungsroman novel. Or it's a novel of the Bildungsroman genre. I dont know what sounds better. And how do you pronounce Bildungsroman?
Asked by Rio G - Sun Oct 5 18:43:01 2008 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Bildungsroman is a noun from the German, Bildung (education) + Roman (novel) so in your first suggestion the word "novel" is superfluous and your second suggestion is fine. Pronunciation is bilt-ungs-romaan
