Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel (German pronunciation: [ˈɡeɔʁk ˈvɪlhɛlm ˈfʁiːdʁɪç ˈheːɡəl]) (August 27, 1770 – November 14, 1831) was a German philosopher, one of the creators of German Idealism. His historicist and idealist account of the total reality as a whole revolutionized European philosophy and was an important precursor to continental philosophy.

Hegel developed a comprehensive philosophical framework, or "system", to account in an integrated and developmental way for the relation of mind and nature, the subject and object of knowledge, and psychology, the state, history, art, religion and philosophy. In particular, he developed a concept of mind or spirit that manifested itself in a set of contradictions and oppositions that it ultimately integrated and united, without eliminating either pole or reducing one to the other. Examples of such contradictions include those between nature and freedom, and between immanence and transcendence.

Hegel influenced writers of widely varying positions, including both his admirers (Bauer, Brandom, Feuerbach, Marx, Bradley, Dewey, Sartre, Küng, Kojève, Žižek) and his detractors (Schelling, Kierkegaard, Schopenhauer, Nietzsche, Peirce, Popper, Russell). His influential conceptions are of speculative logic or "dialectic", "absolute idealism", "Spirit", negativity, sublation (Aufhebung in German), the "Master/Slave" dialectic, "ethical life" and the importance of history.

Do you know Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel the German Philopher?
Q. What do you think of his books? I m planning to buy his book(s) i.e. Phenomenology of Mind and Encyclopedia of the Philosophical Sciences for self-help & self-discovery purposes. Some input of these two books would be much appreciated. Also, additional info on his other two books are certainly welcome i.e. The science of Logic and Elements of the Philosophy of Right All response are much appreciated Thanks in Advance

A. At the time Hegel wrote his books there were fewer divisions of philosophical thought than there are today. You could probably put psychology, (a little sociology) and political science into the mix. Hegel was credited by Karl Marx to have given him the methodology to come up with Das Kapital and the Communist Manifesto. Hegel is remembered most for 'Dialectics' in which one comes up with a thesis and proposes its antithesis and then works toward a middle ground which he called synthesis. Hegel was well versed in the writings of others such as Locke and J.S. Mill. Enjoy.

A. Hegel is perhaps most well-known for his teleological account of history, an account which was later taken over by Marx and inverted into a materialist theory of an historical development culminating in communism More about Hegel's philosophical history The Inexorability of History As we have already seen, Hegel's view of the world is determinedly historical; he believed that history itself (involving another triad, of original/reflective/philo sophical history) exhibits the growth of self-consciousness in the Absolute, the process of development by means of which the Weltgeist comes to know itself. But since history inevitably follows the pattern of logical necessity through the dialectical movement from thesis to antithesis to… [cont.]
