A goddess is a female deity. Often deities are part of a polytheistic system that includes several deities in a pantheon. In some cultures goddesses are commonly associated with the Earth, motherhood, love, and the household, often reflecting the historical gender roles of that culture. In other cultures, goddesses may also be associated with functions such as war, death, and destruction as well as healing.

The primacy of a monotheistic or near-monotheistic "Great Goddess" is advocated by some modern matriarchists as a female version of, preceding, or analogue to, the Abrahamic God associated with the historical rise of monotheism in the Mediterranean Axis Age.

Some currents of Neopaganism, in particular Wicca, have a ditheistic concept of a single goddess and a single god, who in hieros gamos represent a united whole. Polytheistic reconstructionists focus on reconstructing polytheistic religions, including the various goddesses and figures associated with indigenous cultures.

How do classical gods and goddesses typically look and conduct themselves?
Q. What kinds of powers do gods and goddesses have? How and for what purpose fo gods and goddesses interact with humans?

A. There are many different pantheons with many different behavioural and/or dress codes. Since you do not specify I can hardly get into delineating the differences here. Norse Gods do not behave as Greek Gods do. Since the Greeks were vain and petty their gods were similar - just look at your classmates, pick out the most despicably beautiful and conceited people, and there you go. Greek Gods a la carte. However, in comparison to the Norse pantheon, the Greek gods were models of restraint, and omnipotent to boot. Try doing a search for 'Classical Mythology" sometime and specify a pantheon, you can find out a lot.

Is there a certain scent that is associated directly with Greek Gods and Goddesses?
Q. I'm looking for a certain scent that could have been used at a ceremony or at an altar back in Ancient Greece, a certain scent that would have been used for a certain god. Even if there are actualy no scents that are used directly for them, could you all give me some of your own ideas? Imagination is Welcome!!! They are the 13 gods and goddesses. Thank You!

A. Frankincense is pretty popular. :) The link below is for the Orphic Hymns to the various gods and goddesses. If you click on them individually, you'll see an incense listed near the top, for example: "The Fumigation from Frankincense." This translation appears to feature both the Greek and Roman names of the gods, but the Orphics were Greeks. Some other scents used in more modern worship are pomegranate, fig and other fruits, sage, etc.

Why are there so many Gods and Goddesses in Wicca?
Q. I am very interested in Wicca, but I realise that there are so many Gods and Goddesses, all 'representing' different things within nature... the amount seems so unrealistic and I prefer to just think of the God and Goddess and one 'energy' each. What I would like to know is why there are this many and is it possible and or true to the Wiccan faith to go with my preferences? Thank you.

A. You can. There are two broad philosophies of perception of deity acceptable in Wicca ... One is called Polytheism - the belief in many gods, that each are unique and distinct from each other. This is common for older or more traditional forms of Wicca. The other is Pantheism - in which deity is perceived as one (or two) divine entities from which each individual god and goddess is an aspect, or focused part of the whole - a lot like a facet on a diamond. This is more common among newer Wiccan traditions and eclectics of various sorts. There are other persceptions of deity such as animism or monotheism, but it becomes increasingly difficult to justify these as part of definable Wiccan belief. Anyway, don't worry too much about what… [cont.]
