Nounpharmacy (plural pharmacies)
Related termsFrom Wiktionary under the GNU Free Documentation License. Pharmacy is the health profession that links the health sciences with the chemical sciences and it is charged with ensuring the safe and effective use of pharmaceutical drugs. The word derives from the Greek φάρμακον (pharmakon), "drug, medicine" (the earliest form of the word is the Mycenaean Greek pa-ma-ko, attested in Linear B syllabic script). The scope of pharmacy practice includes more traditional roles such as compounding and dispensing medications, and it also includes more modern services related to health care, including clinical services, reviewing medications for safety and efficacy, and providing drug information. Pharmacists, therefore, are the experts on drug therapy and are the primary health professionals who optimize medication use to provide patients with positive health outcomes. An establishment in which pharmacy (in the first sense) is practiced is called a pharmacy, chemist's or (in the United States) drug store. US drug stores commonly sell not only medicines, but also miscellaneous items such as candy (sweets), cosmetics, and magazines, as well as light refreshments or groceries. The word pharmacy is derived from its root word pharma which was a term used since the 15th–17th centuries. In addition to pharma responsibilities, the pharma offered general medical advice and a range of services that are now performed solely by other specialist practitioners, such as surgery and midwifery. The pharma (as it was referred to) often operated through a retail shop which, in addition to ingredients for medicines, sold tobacco and patent medicines. The pharmas also used many other herbs not listed. In its investigation of herbal and chemical ingredients, the work of the pharma may be regarded as a precursor of the modern sciences of chemistry and pharmacology, prior to the formulation of the scientific method. I did decent in high school..but I always get the "college is not high school" saying...help pleassse Asked by matt b - Sun Apr 15 13:40:04 2007 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments A. I was on the pre-pharmacy track and decided to change my major in sophomore year because of the difficulty of the course. I had a 4.56 GPA in highschool with all honors or AP courses, but i did awful in calculus and chemistry courses in college. The class averages on each test were in the 'D' range. Even when i studied my BUTT off for every test, i could never get higher than a C because the information was not only difficult, but looked nothing like anything our classes taught. I am now a psychology major and getting nothing but A's in even the hardest courses, such as my 5 credit neurobiology course (i have a 98%.) Hell yeha dude!!! im a 1st year Pharm.D. student here in LA, but ive had a passion for pharmacy since high school as well!!! go to rxist.com or drugs.com and get the top 1,2,300 trade/generic names, and then the drugs indication/s(what its used for) and rip thru em! know every brand and generic name for every drug, then learn what they're for, THEN learn each ones drug-drug interaction, and thennn learn drug-FOOD interactions. as soon as you think youve learned everything (btw, the above wil probably take a few years) as soon as you graduate, go to Tech school and get a tech license, join ASHP (american society of health system pharmacists), and make some friends at your pharmacy school of choice. Q. I'm planning to go to Pharmacy School in Micigan in couple years but inorder to get into the Pharmacy School they'd like you to have some experience. So I'm thinking of getting the Pharm Tech certificate and find a job in a pharmacy. I heard that its really hard to get into pharmacies w/o any experience. Could anyone please tell me or help me with this matter. I'd greatly appreciate it. Thanks in advance. Asked by Help06 - Thu Oct 22 13:09:36 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments A. You should take the preparation courses for the pharmacy school now, like chemistry and anything else in medicine. Then you should have a record of being a volunteer in a hospital or clinic with some pharmacy exposure. You should really call or go into Pharmacies in your town and ask the Phamacist these same questions and get the best information. There are some employment agencies which specialize in careers in medical jobs, so call and ask them how you should pursue employment. Good luck.
