Asked by Bikerblondie - Wed Nov 4 23:39:48 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments A. Well there are mixed stories and stuff, about fakes and real encounters. The origin behind the legend is Mother Leeds had 12 children and she she said if she had her 13th it would be the devil. Well whatta you know, she gives birth and the infant is born normal but it transforms and grows a tail, wings, hooves and a horse head. It kills the midwife and then it flies out, and it's been wild ever since. It's been sighted since 1735. It's in the woods in the Pine Barren area in NJ. I think it still exists. If you google it you can find some stories of sightings. IMO I can't even look at the newspaper drawing or I feel like vomiting. That lists a bunch of sightings. I'm sorry if I'm no help but the topic intrests me greatly. ETA:… [cont.] Answered by Love Coke - Wed Nov 4 23:53:03 2009 is the jersey devil harassing me ?

The creature is often described as a flying biped with a long neck, horselike head, leathery wings, hooves, and tail, as well as a shrill blood-curdling scream. There are many possible origins of the Jersey Devil legend. The earliest legends date back to Native American folklore. The Lenni Lenape tribes called the area around Pine Barrens "Popuessing", meaning "place of the dragon". Swedish explorers later named it "Drake Kill", "drake" being a Swedish word for dragon, and "kill" meaning channel or arm of the sea (river, stream, etc.). Not surprisingly, the Jersey Devil legend is fueled by the various testimonials from reputable eyewitnesses who have reported to have encountered the creature, there are still reported sightings within the New Jersey area. Many contemporary theorists believe that the Jersey Devil could possibly be a very rare, unclassified species which instinctually fears and attempts to avoid humans. Another factor that supports the cryptozoologica l theory is the fact that it is more likely that a species could endure over a span of several hundred years, rather than the existence of a single creature living for over 500 years. The physical descriptions of the Jersey Devil appear to be mostly consistent with a species of pterosaur such as a dimorphodon. The most accepted origin of the story as far as New Jerseyans are concerned started with Mother Leeds . From Google Product Search: "jersey devil" |
