Jewish Holiday

A Jewish holiday or festival is a day or series of days observed by Jews as a holy or secular commemoration of an important event in Jewish history. In Hebrew, Jewish holidays and festivals, depending on their nature, may be called yom tov ("good day") (Yiddish: yontif) or Ḥagh/Chag ("festival") or ta'anit ("fast").

A "Yom Tov" has similar obligations and restrictions to Shabbat, with the exception that you can cook, carry, and transfer fire (from a pre-existing flame).

The origins of various Jewish holidays generally can be found in Biblical mitzvot (commandments), rabbinical mandate, and modern Israeli history.

Used in the Jewish holiday Chanukah, what is the difference between the Menorah and Chanukiah?
Q. I've heard both names, but what is the difference between them??
Asked by Stacey (spkl1) - Wed Dec 5 20:22:30 2007 - - 6 Answers - 0 Comments

A. strictly speaking, a menorah has 7 branches and a channukiah has 9. the channukiah is used to commemorate the 8 days of channukah which celebrates the ability of oil added to the menorah in the temple to stay lit. now, the word "menorah" is used interchangeably around channukah time which channukiah (like in a "channukah menorah".

If Obama had compared Jewish Purim holiday to Holloween, would there be a different reaction?
Q. John McCain said it, but it doesn't seem to concern alot of people. But if Obama said, would it have a different response? Just curious.
Asked by Sexy-Azn - Wed Mar 26 08:45:49 2008 - - 7 Answers - 0 Comments

A. I don't know. I currently live around one of the largest orthodox Jewish communities outside of Israel (northern Chicago). And THEY compare Purim to Halloween. I would compare it to Purim. Seeing that Obama is from Chicago, he would probably compare it to Purim too. I think they could find something else better to complain about than Halloween OR Purim. And I worked once in a Jewish candy store...trust me...there's candy involved!
