What are the pros and cons to opening a pharmacy vs working for a chain, economically?
Q. I just graduated from pharmacy school and I don't know if I want to open my own small pharmacy or work for a chain pharmacy such as Walgreen's, Rite Aid, etc. What are the economic pros and cons?
Asked by SanJuanPR01013 - Sat Dec 12 21:41:38 2009 - Economics - 1 Answers - Comments

A. Pros are obvious. The wholesale cost is lower. It means also more profits. The chain will keep stocks, technical support, advertisement and updated your industry knowledge regularly. The cons are also obvious. You have to pay for the chain license. if you open your own, you have to risk at all costs. It time to calculate and compare costs, the access to the credit and the time to break even before making any decission.

How Medical or Pharmacy schools look on those who transferred from 2 year college to University?
Q. My daughter is planning to transfer to UC from community college with biology major. She fulfilled her requirements in CC which means that when she later apply to Pharmacy or Medical school, they would notice that all their prerequisites have been taken in CC. Should she retake these classes in the University or not? (O-Chem, Biology, etc.). Will it be even possible?

A. It's not frowned upon in the least. In today's world their are many non-traditional students..some of us may need to work, therefore we spend time in a less expensive cc school. Or there are those that trashed early education and need to pull rank before getting into a university. What 's important is the progress made and the ability to keep it steady. They take note of this...If you think your doctor was an A student think again, chances are he spent time in a cc. or had freshman probation. I've made many mistakes...leading me to one of the top medical universities. They understand more then you know. Bottom line ...if she's smart, she'll make it...& should be proud of where she came from. What it comes down to is ability, Despite my… [cont.]

A. Simply put, pharmacology is the study of how drugs act in the body. Pharmacy programs train students to use pharmacology and a host of other disciplines/skills to determine which medications are most appropriate for specific patients, as well as what/how to monitor for efficacy or toxicity, etc. Pharmacologists tend to be research-oriented, while pharmacists (trained in pharmacy programs) tend to be clinically-oriented (i.e. day-to-day care of patients), though pharmacists certainly can and are involved in a wealth of research (this research, again, tends to be clinically-oriented, rather than in vitro).

What is the average pay for a pharmacy technician?
Q. I'm currently going to school for my pre-pharmacy degree and was wondering what the average hourly pay for a pharmacy tech was in different areas of Oklahoma?
Asked by Cody B - Sun Aug 21 23:15:06 2011 - Health Care - 3 Answers - Comments

A. Average annual starting salary is about $19,000. You can probably expect about $9-11/hr to start. A tech with 10 yrs experience may hit about $17-20/hr. If you luck out and can get full-time - 40 hrs/wk - you'll gross maybe $400, take home a little over $300/wk. In other words, there are some pharm tech jobs available, but don't expect anything but low-wage jobs.

A. It varies from state to state, but I think the normal requirements are 2 years of work in a pharmacy or 2-3000 work hours on the job (rough equivalent of 2 years, forgive me for not being precise). It would be a great prospect for a future pharmacist, but you should know that you do not need to become a tech to get experience in pharmacy at all. If you're still in highschool, visit your local hospital and set up a meeting with the clinical pharmacist or director there, explain that you're interested in entering the pharmacy program at the college you plan on attending and more often than not, they will schedule you to shadow them for a day and take you around to tour the hospital pharmacist's duties (if you're truly interested, they might… [cont.]

Walgreen's - 135.46 Walmart - 101.79 Safeway - 145.30 CVS - 130.29 COSTCO - 45.01 Clearly Costco was the cheapest for the drug I was looking for. I just wonder why all the others are screwing us all. Hope this helps.

A. Hell yeha dude!!! im a 1st year Pharm.D. student here in LA, but ive had a passion for pharmacy since high school as well!!! go to rxist.com or drugs.com and get the top 1,2,300 trade/generic names, and then the drugs indication/s(what its used for) and rip thru em! know every brand and generic name for every drug, then learn what they're for, THEN learn each ones drug-drug interaction, and thennn learn drug-FOOD interactions. as soon as you think youve learned everything (btw, the above wil probably take a few years) as soon as you graduate, go to Tech school and get a tech license, join ASHP (american society of health system pharmacists), and make some friends at your pharmacy school of choice.

How to become a pharmacy technician in Utah?
Q. I do not have the time or the money to go to school for a year to become a pharmacy technician. My question is, can I purchase books, study at home, then take the PTCB exam? After that, do I need to work so many hours before I can get licensed with the state or do I apply for my license right away? Do companies hire pharmacy technicians that didn't go to school? Thanks for your help!

A. Before obtaining the license to practice, the pharmacist will also have to undergo internship under a licensed pharmacist, and pass a state examination. Becoming a pharmacist is thus a painstaking process, and it is no wonder that there are more pharmacist jobs going round than pharmacists seeking jobs! If you are really serious about becoming a pharmacist, you should get more information on it. You need to visit websites that cover the subject in more detail

A. Most likely you will assigned to the insurance company "pharmacy help desk". Your duties would include resolving problems. During the prescription online adjudication process claims are sometimes rejected by the insurance company. The pharmacy employee calls the insurance company "pharmacy help desk" to resolve rejections. Some common reasons for rejection that have to be resolved: NDC not covered Refills not covered Too soon to refill Patient not covered Invalid person code Insurance company computer unavailable for claim processing.

How can I work in a pharmacy as a technician or assistant ?
Q. Hello, I am a pre-pharmacy major looking to gain working experience in a pharmacy. Since I don't have certificate, I think it's hard to work as a pharmacy technician. How can I get involved in a pharmacy environment , even with low wage. my main objective is to gain experience. Thank you for your help.
Asked by BoxingTiger - Sat Jun 25 17:32:19 2011 - Health Care - 2 Answers - Comments

A. Pre-pharmacy major was step1. Step 2: Talk to your school counselor or student aid office to initiate a work study program for school credit. Almost all schools have one. Step 3: Take the work study paperwork and a copy of your transcript to all pharmacies in your area and request a pharmacist sponsor you until school is completed (usually 2-3yrs), guaranteeing you a job when you graduate. Should that pharmacy cease to exist for any reason, a high recommendation referral letter would get you in another door. So, be very good at what you do ! Step 4: Type in your browser: us Career Institute.info. Click "Programs", click "Course Selections", click Pharmacy Technicians and scroll slowly down the course study LIST to… [cont.]

How should a pharmacy bill prescriptions called in for hospice?
Q. If the patient has Medicare Part D insurance, should the pharmacy bill the Part D, and the hospice just get reimbursed for the copay, or does the law require the hospice to get charged full amount, and get fully reimbursed through government. Any help/websites appreciated.

A. Once a patient enters hospice care, the patient is then billable to Medicare Part A for all services. As such, the hospice needs to be billed the full cost for medications, and they are responsible for submitting that to Medicare.

A. He could do 2 options: 1. Volunteer: This can be done by calling a pharmacy; perferably not one that is a walgreens or CVS because they are a company and customer service base and you would be considered in the way. That would leave private pharmacies or hospital pharmacies to volunteer at. Hospitals are the best because they take volunteers, just remind them that he perfers to be in the pharmacy area. If he gets certified or licensed and volunteer, then he could possibly do more like count the pills out etc... 2. Get certified/licensed: Two ways to do this a. He takes a pharmacy technician class and they will pay for him to be come certified and licensed but it costs money and not to mention to much time, which assuming your husband doesn' [cont.]
