Poker is a family of card games that share betting rules and usually (but not always) hand rankings. Poker games differ in how the cards are dealt, how hands may be formed, whether the high or low hand wins the pot in a showdown (in some games, the pot is split between the high and low hands), limits on bets and how many rounds of betting are allowed. In most modern poker games, the first round of betting begins with some form of forced bet. The action then proceeds to the left. Each player in turn must either match the maximum previous bet or fold, losing all further interest in the hand. A player who matches a bet may also raise, increasing the bet. The betting round ends when all players have either matched the last bet or folded. If all but one player fold on any round, the remaining player collects the pot without showing his hand. If more than one player remains in contention after the final betting round, the hands are shown and the winning hand takes the pot.

Players feel that this betting system distinguishes poker from gambling games. With the minor exception of initial forced bets, money is only placed into the pot voluntarily by a player who, at least in theory, rationally believes the bet has positive expected value. Thus while the outcome of any particular hand is determined mostly by chance, the long-run expectations of the players are determined mostly by their actions chosen based on probability and psychology.

A. 1. Start playing with "play money". The best sites are either pokerstars or fulltiltpoker. AFter you get a feel of the game you may want to progress to the 25/50 cent tables where books and other concepts are much more imporartant than in play money games. 2. Read a book. The most reccomended book is called "The theory of poker. Heres a link: After you read this book you have to choose between no limit or limit. For limit here is my book reccomedation: Ace on a river, heres a link : For no limit heres a link: 3. There are many concepts that must be mastered to become a succesful poker player. You have to know when to bluff, when to slowplay, when to check raise, when to contiuation bet, learn to be for the most part very agressive… [cont.]

When playing poker do you change your style when you are playing against a woman?
Q. Do you take female poker players seriously online and at live games? I ask that question because a woman just won the European Poker Tour at Dortmund. While watching the final table I noticed the guys try to gang up on her. For example when she would make a decent raise someone would always try to push her all-in.

A. I take all opponets seriously unless i have reason to beleive they are a serious fish. So does my play change? No absolutley not, the game is meant to be played equally rather playing vs a woman, a 90 year old person, or a 4 year old at a home game. Ok well home games are a little different but not much. They may have been ganging up on her because they felt she was weak well i guess she proved them wrong.

How can someone find a personal poker sponsor?
Q. I am an aspiring poker player. I have to find a sponsor, because I don't have enough money to play. I am very good, but I'm smart enough to know what I can and can't do with the limited money. Does anyone have any suggestions?
Asked by superman41082 - Sun Aug 6 11:44:34 2006 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. You will probably have to do it like I done it. Just keep a job and build your bankroll a little at a time until you make it. That's probably the best way anyway. You don't wanna have to worry about giving your sponsor a cut or losing his money. You wanna play poker as stress free as possible. You can also play games that don't require much of a bankroll. Heads up tournaments online for example. Sit and Go tournaments don't require much of a bankroll either. Conact me, we'll talk.
