Shabbat

Shabbat (Hebrew: שַׁבָּת‎, Ashkenazi pronunciation: Shabbos, in English: the Sabbath, "rest" or "cessation") is the seventh day of the Jewish week and the Jewish day of rest. On Shabbat, Jews recall the Biblical Creation account in Genesis in which God creates the Heavens and the Earth in six days and rests on the seventh.

Shabbat is a festive day when Jews are freed from the regular labors of everyday life. It offers an opportunity to contemplate the spiritual aspects of life and spend time with family. Shabbat observance entails refraining from a range of activities prohibited on Shabbat, such as lighting a fire and cooking.

Shabbat is observed from a few minutes before sunset on Friday evening until the appearance of three stars in the sky on Saturday night. Shabbat is ushered in by lighting candles and reciting a blessing. Traditionally, three festive meals are eaten: on Friday night, Saturday morning, and late Saturday afternoon. Friday night dinner begins with kiddush and a blessing recited over two loaves of challah.

How do I dress for Shabbat services?
Q. I'm thinking of converting to Judaism. I met the rabbi and he invited me to attend services anytime and talk to him. He runs a Reform temple with older congregants. I'd love to attend, but I'm unsure of the dress code. I've read many varying suggestions online. I was thinking khakis and a collared shirt. Should I go with my outfit or go for something more formal/casual?

A. answer: Khakis and collared shirt will work, especially heading into spring/summer. Grab a kippah when you walk in (there should be some at the door), introduce yourself to someone and say it's your first visit and you'll be introduced to others and someone will explain the service.

Why does Shabbat require so much from us?
Q. Okay, my question is, why are we not allowed to turn the light swithc on during the Shabbat, as if it takes too much effort and you can lose your blessings. Isn't walking from your bedroom to your kitchen require more effort than turning the light switch on? Don't we kinda become hypocrites when we jump to extremes like that? So where does it begin and where are the limitations?

A. The problem starts from your misunderstanding of Shabbat. Work even hard work is not prohibited on the Shabbat. It is the creation of something new which is prohibited. One may not build, cook or write because these are creative activities and wew are to rest from such actions. One reason for this is to affirm our belief that G-d created the World. By refraining from such activity we show that we believe that without G-d's assisstance we would not be able to do these activities. Where does the knowledge and the strength and the ability to think come from. From G-d. These are gifts which He bestows upon us every day. We tend to take them for granted unless an arm is broken or alzheimer's sets in (G-d forbid). Shabbat is our reminder how we… [cont.]
