Texas ( /ˈtɛksəs/ (help·info)) is the second largest U.S. state in both area and population, and the largest state in the contiguous United States. Located in the South Central United States, Texas is bordered by Mexico to the south, New Mexico to the west, Oklahoma to the north, Arkansas to the northeast, and Louisiana to the east. Texas has an area of 268,820 square miles (696,200 km), and a growing population of 24.6 million residents. Houston is the largest city in Texas and the fourth-largest in the United States, while Dallas–Fort Worth and Houston are the 7th and 9th largest United States metropolitan areas. Other major cities include San Antonio, El Paso, and Austin—the state capital. Texas is nicknamed the Lone Star State to signify Texas as an independent republic and was a reminder of the state's struggle for independence from Mexico. The "Lone Star" can be found on the Texas State Flag and on the Texas State Seal today. [3]

Due to its size and geologic features such as the Balcones Fault, Texas contains diverse landscapes that resemble both the American Southeast and the Southwest. Although Texas is popularly associated with the Southwestern deserts, less than 10% of the land area is desert. Most of the population centers are located in areas of former prairies, grasslands, forests, and the coastline. Traveling from east to west, one can observe terrain that ranges from coastal swamps and piney woods, to rolling plains and rugged hills, and finally the desert and mountains of the Big Bend. Due to its long history as a center of the American cattle industry, Texas is associated with the image of the cowboy.

Historically and culturally, Texas is usually considered part of the American South. However, with its Spanish and Mexican roots, and the physical characteristics west of a Fort Worth to the Corpus Christi line, it can also be classified as part of the American Southwest. While residents acknowledge these categories, many claim an independent "Texan" identity superseding regional labels.

The term "six flags over Texas" came from the several nations that had rule over the territory. Spain was the first European country to claim the area of Texas. France held a short-lived colony in Texas. Mexico controlled the territory until 1836 when Texas won its independence, becoming an independent Republic. In 1845 it joined the United States as the 28th state. The state's annexation set off a chain of events that caused the Mexican–American War in 1846. Texas delared its secession from the United States in early 1861, joining the Confederate States of America during the American Civil War. After the war and its restoration to the Union, Texas entered a long period of economic stagnation.

In the early 1900s, oil discoveries initiated an economic boom in the state. Texas has since economically diversified. Today it has more Fortune 500 companies than any other U.S. state. With a growing base of industry, the state is a leader in many, including agriculture, petrochemicals, energy, computers and electronics, aerospace, and biomedical sciences. It leads the nation in export revenue and has the second-highest gross state product.

What's the difference between Utah and Texas?
Q. My brother is doing a state report on Utah. I live in Utah and he lives in Texas so I agreed to help. I've got the basic stuff like the state bird, history, local restaurants and stuff. But I'd like to really give his class examples of the differences in Utah that they don't have in Texas. I already have fry sauce, the school system, different restaurants and stuff, and professional sports items. Any other ideas?

What are the Texas state laws requiring a college transcript?
Q. I currently live in Texas but completed some school in Indiana, leaving without a degree. The school at which I am now registered requires a transcript from the Indiana school even though I will neither be transferring credits nor accepting Federal student aid. Said transcript is therefore completely superfluous and useless to me but my institution is blindly repeating themselves about its necessity. What is the Texas statute that mandates a transcript, if any? I need to know if it is a school requirement or a legitimate state regulation since I still owe money to my previous school. Thank you for your time!

A. it is merely a school requirement, the state policy would be not giving complete and true information in your state application (i.e. leaving out previous schooling). your school needs to know if you are in good standing with your previous school and from the sound of it, financially you are not.

In Texas, what are the consequences for falsifying information on a marriage license?
Q. In Texas, an individual is required to sign an affidavit at the time of applying for a marriage license stating that he or she does NOT have any child support arrears. What are the consequences of falsifying the info? IE-swearing that there are no monies owed, when there are in fact arrears. How is the law inforced? How is it reported? Would the marriage be legal? How could such a thing be reported?

A. Odds are the consequences are twofold. a) the marriage is null and void, since you used false pretenses and misinformed the authorities. b) You are liable to criminal prosecution under the statutes concerning forgery and falsifying official documents. c) If you also misreprented your situation to your new spouse... she might put you in the kind of doo doo that would leave even Donlad Trump or Bill Gates a pauper.
